In brief: Pitt to replace Cruise in fourth Mission

According to the Hollywood rumour mill, the franchise's backers Paramount are casting about for a new action hero following their fractious split with Cruise last month. Unnamed sources have claimed that Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, will be retired in the next film and replaced by "a gutsy new operative" played by the Mr and Mrs Smith star. "Of all the actors out there, Brad could definitely fill the shoes," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of Exhibitor Relations. He pointed to other examples of movie icons who have been played by different actors. "Batman has changed numerous times. It's not who you put in the role, it's how you reinvent the franchise."
Bennett Miller, director of the Oscar-winning Capote, is starting work on a new project, The Immortalist, a futuristic drama about life extension. Miller told the Hollywood Reporter that the film was "not a science-fiction film [but] a drama set in the very real world of those pursuing biological immortality." The script is being written by Dante Harper, and the film will be backed by Paramount and Brad Pitt's production company Plan B.
Mickey Hargitay, the bodybuilder turned actor who served as an inspiration for the young Arnold Schwarzenegger, has died at the age of 80. Born in Budapest, Hargitay found fame as a member of Mae West's stage revue, later married Jayne Mansfield and acted in such films as Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Promises! Promises! and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? His daughter, Mariska Hargitay, won an Emmy this year for her performance in Law and Order: SVU.
